Cheddar

16 November 2017

As some of you may know, we have recently moved from Kent to Bristol, it is a big change but we are both very happy here and it is such a beautiful part of the country full of new places to explore.  Our new home wasn’t actually ready until the week after Anthony started his new job so I booked us into an Air BnB for a week from the Sunday near Anthony’s work. We decided to treat the weekend…

Savonlinna – The Pearl of Lake Saimaa

6 November 2017

Savonlinna was the nearest big town to us so we really had to visit it while we were in Finland. It is referred to as the pearl of Lake Saimaa and is most famous for its castle, Olavinlinna.  Olavinlinna was built in the 15th century and unsurprisingly for Finland, is surrounded by water. During the Middle Ages, most of Finland was actually owned by Sweden and so the castle was built to help defend the Eastern border. Following a war…

The Northern Lights

3 November 2017

Seeing the Northern Lights has always been a dream of mine, as it is for most people. When we initially decided to go to Finland, I was looking to go to the North of the island where the chances of seeing them are much higher but as explained here, we weren’t able to get to the North very easily and so decided to go to the West of the country instead. I was resigned to the fact that we weren’t going…

Lets Take our Hearts for a Walk in the Woods

2 November 2017

I love being outdoors and going for walks in the countryside, I love the fresh air, the silence and the simplicity of it all. Our walk through the Finnish woodland was definitely one of my favourite walks. It wasn’t just quiet, it was silent. There were more trees than I had ever seen before. The roads were long and straight but no cars drove down them. It was just us, on our own little adventure.  We reached the end of…

The Land of the Thousand Lakes

1 November 2017

Finland is often referred to as the ‘land of the thousand lakes’ and it is not difficult to see why. Finland actually has a few more than a thousand, it has 188,000 to be precise – that is one lake for every 26 people! The combination of clear blue waters and vast woodland provides the perfect backdrop of colours for an Autumn holiday. As you will see from my previous blog post here, our cottage for the week was on a…

A Spontaneous Sunset

25 October 2017

Every sunset is beautiful but the sunsets in Finland were the most beautiful I had ever seen.  When driving back to the cottage one evening, we saw a sign for parking and were simply curious what it was for as there was nothing around, and not being in a rush, we decided to drive down and see what was there. It appeared to simply be an open section in the middle of the woods to park your car, but when…

A Relaxing Week in Finland

18 October 2017

Anthony and I have recently come back from the most relaxing week of our lives. I absolutely love going on cottage breaks (see The Hayloft post from last year) and we had already had our sunny holiday for the year (see here, here and here) and so weren’t looking for anywhere particularly hot, so it was really just a case of picking the location for our cottage. We rented a cottage in Brittany a couple of years ago and went to the Cotswolds last…

Castle Park in Bristol

10 September 2017

We were very lucky with our Summer this year with some beautiful weekends of sunshine and clear skies. Although being in Anthony’s studio flat wasn’t ideal on hot days, it forced us to go out and explore and as a result, allowed us to discover Castle Park.  We popped into Marks and Spencer on our way and filled a cooler bag with picnic food – (I’ve never had a picnic where I haven’t packed excessively). Having stocked up on way…

Bristol International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

27 August 2017

Bristol’s International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta conveniently coincided with our four-year anniversary, providing us with the perfect way to celebrate.  The balloons launch at 6am and 6pm but we figured that it would be busy for the evening launch and that the morning launch would at least force us to wake up early and make the most of the day. After a late night, I begrudgingly set our alarms for 4.45 and after getting ready, we jumped in a taxi…

Kent County Show

6 August 2017

I love anything to do with the countryside and animals so I was very excited to be going to Kent County Show this year. We woke up bright and early so that we wouldn’t miss anything and headed to the Maidstone site. Kent County Show is very popular, with around 80,000 visitors going each year. The show is hosted by the Kent County Agricultural Society which was started in 1923 with the aim of holding an agricultural show every year. The…

A Lavender Massage

30 July 2017

A few months ago I booked to have a massage…in a lavender field! It sounded amazing and I was so excited in the months leading up to it.  After a couple of months of looking at the photos on their Instagram account, the day finally came.  I was looking forward to it immensely and having seen on the website that it would run regardless of the weather, I was very relieved to see that it was nice weather on the…
